General Gardening Guide

General Gardening Guide

I would like to start by sharing how this overview will be based in a traditional gardening fashion. Traditional like your great-grandparents, with some modern flare. I will address natural patterns of the garden along with some general, good gardening practices. When we garden it is great to harvest the bounty and spend time outdoors but there are many other benefits as well! Gardening, as well as spending time in the forest, have both been show to lower the hormones and chemicals that are associated with stress. Getting your hands (and feet!) in the dirt also help build a healthy immune system, through interaction with the microbiome.

I find observation to be the most beneficial practice in my garden. These observations, written in my garden journal, are the only way to have accurate information on preceding seasons for my specific micro-climate and plants. Not every plant will love your garden's location or soil conditions. That is OK. There are plenty of plants for every situation, all seasons of the year.

Let's get started…

Additional Resources

If you would like to get more in-depth with the concepts I have shared I would recommend two books to start. “Gaia’s Garden” by Toby Hemenway and “How to Grow More Vegetables” by John Jeavons.

Happy gardening!
